Casa Burmester has been shipping tawny to Britain and Europe since 1750, so you know they’re pretty savvy when it comes to porto production. This one picked up 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards as well as a stack of gold medals thanks to its coffee, caramel deliciousness. We don’t have many ports roll through the doors at the ‘Fo but they get a serious amount of attention when they do, and for good reason. There ain’t nothing more relaxing than kicking back with a glass of tawny at home, so fortify your strongholds mofos.

Brilliantly red in colour, it is also delightfully sweet, with sugary fruits such as macerated cherries, candied treats and a little bit of black tea. Simply wonderful. Deliberately made as a young wine, ‘ruby’ is all about retaining youthfulness, beauty and freshness. Made from your favourite Portuguese varieties: touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinto cão, tinta barroca and tinta amarela (yep, we totally remembered all those off the top of our heads). This is the best way to enter yourself into the realm of fortified wines and the world of ports. With a friendly sugar balance, and bright red colour - this ticks plenty of boxes for us. An all class act, Ruby is.

From those stunning terraced vineyards sitting on the Douro river, Burmester have given this Tawny the extra level of love from vineyard to bottle and beyond. Golden-brown in hue, with those whisky-like characters of vanilla, nuts, figs and spice following your experience from nose to palate. The blend over 4 years of barrel ageing means you get the best of all worlds, some youth and tannin from the young-blooded barrels, and deep viscosity, colour, and complexity from the oldies. Perfectly sweet, this is a wine that can see you through any occassion: breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert.
