Why do we love this case?
This is serious stuff - three powerful elixirs, each distinct from one another but unmistakably speaking of the place from which the hail. Potent wines that offer seemingly unending layers of rich berries, earth, leather, tar, cedar... given the time and the patience I may just be able to discover every corner of the known and unknown universe in these three wines. That is the level of sheer complexity that Bordeaux offers the wine lover, and why it remains the jewel in the crown of all things wine.
1x Château Bellefont-Belcier Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019
Red — Merlot Blend
Bordeaux — France
Fine wine lovers, it’s time to sit up and pay attention. What we have here is nothing less than superb, stunning and yes, spectacular.
In 2006 Château Bellefont-Belcier was classified as Grand Cru Classé, after over a century in operation. They grow superb merlot and cabernets on south-facing slopes of limestone-clay, which are handpicked in small parcels and handled in the winery with the utmost attention to detail. The wines see 30% new oak, with the remainder being raised in larger vats and barriques of 1-2 years. This oak adds to the already powerful and structured wine that certainly has a long life ahead of it. Jeb Dunnuck’s 97-point review below gives you an idea of what to expect from the wine.

1x Chateau Tour Saint Christophe Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020
Red — Merlot Blend
Bordeaux — France
Château Tour Saint Christophe is a bit of an anomoly in Bordeaux as a section of the vineyard is planted on narrow terraces. The site overlooks the Saint Laurent Valley and is located entirely within the appellation of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The southwest-facing plot over clay and limestone enjoys perfect drainage due to the terraced arrangement.
This 80/20 blend of merlot and cabernet franc is fermented in a mix of concrete tanks and Bordeaux barrels before resting for 15 months in 40% new oak. On the nose you’ll find black cherry, tar, chocolate, spice and leather. Blackberry and pepper dominate the palate and the finish is lengthy with ripe tannins.
You’d pay $140 full price.

1x Château Thibeaud–Maillet Pomerol 2018
Red — Merlot
Bordeaux — France
Château Thibeaud-Maillet is a tiny vineyard (less than 2 hectares!) located in Pomerol, just 400 meters from the iconic Château Petrus, and was founded in the 1800s by the Thiebault family. Their vineyards are dedicated to merlot with vine age ranging from 25 to 50 years old. A hand harvest leads to time in 50% new French oak. The resulting wine is rich and elegant, expressing blackcurrant, leather, pencil shavings and floral notes. Spice and minerality drive the finish, making for an enjoyable Bordeaux that more than hints at its famous neighbour.
