1x Luciano Arduini Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2020
Red — Red Blend
Veneto — Italy
A blend of native Italian varieties, corvina (60%), corvinone (20%) and rondinella (20%), this Italian beauty is no shrinking violet. On the contrary, it’s big, powerful and robust. Translated, ripasso means to ‘re-pass’, or ‘to go over again’. This refers to the traditional method of putting the resulting wine on Amarone grape skins for 15 days to extract extra colour and tannins. It certainly pumps up the performance, like adding a supercharger to a Ferrari. So you better buckle up!
The oak routine takes on an international flavour, with a third each of French, US and Slavonian oak from Croatia all lending an equal hand. There’s a lot going on here - with layers of fruit cake and spice, lifting with rich plum compote. That extra time on skins delivers plenty of grip on the palate, with brambly herbal notes lingering on the finish. Yep - it’s a supercharged Ferrari alright - but one that’s been tamed for the dinner table.

1x Sovrano Primitivo di Manduria 2021
Red — Primitivo
Puglia — Italy
Here it comes - another vintage of your favourite primitivo, direct from Puglia and this year with another whopping 98 points from Italian wine critic Luca Maroni.
There’s no other wine (including Barolo) that says ‘hedonism’ like primitivo (aka zinfandel), with such a big, face-filling wine followed by oodles of velvety tannins. Fruit-wise, it’s all about plums, fruitcake and spice, in the richest possible way - it’s big and bold with an approachability that belies its heft. It’ll please people with a love for large red wines that don’t pretend to be anything but.
You’d pay $80 full price.

1x Corte Medicea Toscana Rosso Aros 2019
Red — Sangiovese
Tuscany — Italy
This half/half sangiovese cabernet blend typefies Toscana IGT (aka Supertuscan), with all the cherries and sandy tannins you’d expect, plus structure and blackcurrants from cabernet and a few good licks of chocolate and vanilla from judicious oak use.
So here’s where we are, in a world where the likes of Gaia and Sassicaia have paved the way for entry levels from Italy of this quality, just because they don’t conform to outmoded rules. And a lofty 98 points from Luca Maroni just confirms the notion. Let the Italians experiment, I say!

1x Massimo Rattalino Quarantadue Barbaresco DOCG 2018
Red — Nebbiolo
Piemonte — Italy
Barbaresco is widely regarded as more approachable than it’s brash, ballsy sibling, Barolo. There’s still acid and tannin to spare here, but it’s softly aromatic and harmoniously put together. The complexity and depth of flavour is second to none, with heady aromas of roses and violets, alongside sweet, exotic spices and a sprinkling of dusty cocoa. It’s that bit more versatile than Barolo, suited to big, rich stews as much as it is to delicate game and truffle dishes. It’ll age miraculously well, though there’s no need for Barolo’s 20-odd years before opening. This one is absolutely delightful now after a spin in the decanter to stretch it’s legs a little, but will sit happily in the cellar for well over a decade.
You’d pay $120 full price.

1x Lornano Le Bandite Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2017
Red — Sangiovese
Tuscany — Italy
We’ve been importing a couple of wines from Tuscan producer Lornano for a few years now. All the buzz from our Mofos made us realise it was time to expand the range. This is Chianti Classico Riserva of the highest order. 100% sangiovese sourced from a vineyard at 330 metres over shale and alluvial soil. After fermentation, it sees about 20 months in French oak, which adds a cedary backdrop to the wine. This is more of a complement to the fruit rather than an overt presence thankfully, as the wine is wonderfully in balance. You’ll find black cherry, plum, licorice, earthen notes and even hints of balsam in the wine. The tannins are velvety and lead into a long mineral-laden finish. Keep the hits coming, Lornano.
You’d pay $80 full price.

1x Cascina Ca'Rossa Funsu Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
Red — Nebbiolo
Italy — Italy
"So, what is Funsu? There’s a funny family story. Grandfather Alfonso of the Ferrio family was affectionately known as Funsu - and this wine is dedicated to his legacy. Made entirely from nebbiolo, and blended from two vineyards, the intention is to balance an elegant soft nebbiolo, with a vineyard offering more tannin structure. But the trick is, this wine is made entirely in tank - so you can drink it young and pretty. The characters here are all about pleasure you'll want this weekend, not in the next century. Roses, violets and sour cherry pucker with subtle tea leaves and a slight earthiness. Bust out the truffles, the mushrooms, the hard cheese, the risotto... heck, even the rabbit ragu. The food will only get better with this delightful red.
