Some of the best Australian wines are made here, and if you haven’t been yet, it’s time you made the pilgrimage. Skip the tourist traps and go straight to the wineries that make this place iconic. @eldertonwines

Elderton

Location: 3 – 5 Tanunda Rd, Nuriootpa 5355

Open: 7 Days

Elderton is the kind of winery you dream of. Award-winning, with a cellar door set in a 1918 bungalow overlooking the 1894 Command Vineyard. It’s got history, it’s got class, and it’s got some of the best wines in Barossa on pouring too. Go for the shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, but don’t skip the experience - whether a behind-the-scenes tour or a game of tennis on their grass court if that’s your thing. Set & Match to Elderton.

@pindarie

Pindarie

Location: 946 Rosedale Road, Gomersal 5352

Open: 7 Days

Nestled in a heritage stable, Pindarie isn’t just about wine. It’s about the land, the soil, the place. Their Walk/Taste/Graze experience is the full package: walk through their regenerative farm, taste their estate wines, and graze on seasonal dishes that speak to the same epic Barossa terroir as the wine. Their shiraz and grenache are top-notch, but the whole package is what makes Pindarie's cellar door worth dropping into.

undefined

Rockford

Location: 131 Krondorf Road, Tanunda SA 5352

Open: 7 Days

The Rockford cellar door is as Barossa as it gets. They’re preserving the region’s heritage while crafting wines that can stand the test of time. From heritage varietals frontignac and semillon to regional standouts riesling and shiraz, it’s all about the classics here; it’s no surprise that the Rockford Basket Press shiraz is one of the most sought after wines in Australia. The tasting room group size numbers are capped to keep it personal, too.

undefined

Paulmara Estates

Location: 144 Seppeltsfield Rd, Nuriootpa SA 5355

Bookings Essential

Paul and Mara Georgiadis first planted vines on their Marananga home block in 1995, originally with designs on supplying Penfold’s icon wines. The duo established Paulmara in 1999 (no prizes for guessing the inspo behind the name) expanding to add the Paradigm Vineyard in 2011. This being Barossa, shiraz and cab sauvignon are undoubtedly highlights, but also expect to see Italian stalwarts sangiovese, nero d’avola and montepulciano being poured at tasting too…

undefined

Tscharke

Location: 376 Seppeltsfield Rd, Marananga SA 5355

Open: Monday - Saturday, 10am-5pm

Tscharke (pronounced “sharky”): a Barossa winery that gets our buyer Tully misty-eyed. “Changed my life” were her exact words. A huge claim, but it’s well backed by the wines on show at the cellar door - Damien Tscharke knows how to make ‘em. Classic winemaking philosophy with minimal intervention, focusing on getting great fruit from the vineyards: shiraz and grenache are the stars. Don’t walk - run - here to taste something that could change the way you see wine.

undefined

@firstdropwines

First Drop

Location: 30-38 Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa, SA 5355

Open: 7 Days

The team at First Drop offer a cellar door and tapas bar in a 1930s heritage building - a site Penfolds used to call home in Barossa. Shiraz and chardonnay are the big guns on tasting, and the seafood is a must-try alongside. If you’re in the mood for something deeper, book yourself onto a premium tasting for a full-on masterclass - and check their website to see the other shindigs they’re planning soon too.

undefined

@seppeltsfield

Seppeltsfield

Location: 730 Seppeltsfield Road, Seppeltsfield, Barossa Valley SA 5355

Open: 7 Days

Seppeltsfield isn’t just a winery; it’s an institution - they’ve been making single estate drops in the Barossa since 1878. Describing them as “icons” probably falls short - “royalty” is closer to the mark. Where else in the world would you get the chance to taste 100-year-old Tawny Port? One that received a whopping 100pts from the esteemed palates at Halliday. Yes, you read that correctly - a perfect 100pts. Don’t look past the birth year wine experience, either - it’s one of those rare, bucket-list moments you’ll never forget. Otherwise there’s also heaps of tours with different focuses depending on what you’re interested to learn about, an onsite restaurant open for lunch, other artisanal producers housed in the building, and accommodation available too if you want to stay and take it all in. Phew.

Z Wine

Location: SHOP 3, 109-111 Murray Street Tanunda SA 5352

Open: 7 Days

Smack bang in the middle of Tanunda’s eclectic high street you’ll find Z Wine’s urban cellar door. Owned by sisters Janelle and Kristin Zerk, their family put down roots in the Barossa way back in 1846, with the duo going out on their own to set up their eponymous “Z’ label. They’ve continued that family affair in naming some of their award-winning wines after the next generation of Zerks (who we can only hope decide to follow a calling to produce great Barossa shiraz and grenache too). Live music on the weekends, local platters to pair with your wine, it’s a vibe.

undefined

@henschke

Henschke

Location: 26-30 Old Eden Valley Road, Keyneton SA 5353

Open: 7 Days

Another Barossa big-gun where “great” doesn’t really do justice, does it? Henschke are one of Australia’s first families of wine - and with over 150 years of winemaking, they’ve created the benchmark for Barossa shiraz. Their legendary Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are a must-try at least once in your lifetime. Full stop. Don’t miss the deep-dive tours if you really want to geek out over these wines, either.

undefined

@torbreckbarossa

Torbreck

Location: 348 Roennfeldt Rd, Marananga, South Australia 5253

Open: 7 Days

For the last three decades, Torbreck have been singular in their focus - to produce outstanding Rhône style wines from the exceptional soils of the Barossa. If you’re a fan of those Rhône rangers shiraz, grenache, or mourvèdre, this is your place. Head down to their sleek cellar door for a tasting to see for yourself, and consider booking their Clan Room tasting if you’re looking to delve deeper into premium back vintages.

undefined

@hentleyfarm

Hentley Farm

Location: Corner of Gerald Roberts Road and Jenke Roads, Seppeltsfield

Open: 7 Days, Bookings Required

We struggle to find words or phrases that feel “big” enough to encapsulate the rep of some of Barossa’s finest wineries, so we’ll beg forgiveness of James Halliday and steal his description of Hentley Farm: “... as close as you're ever going to find in Australia to a grand cru Burgundy or first-growth Bordeaux.” Their Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are nothing short of exceptional, and the food? Award-winning - the restaurant has been recognised with three hats by the AGFG. Our advice: book ahead.

undefined

@yalumbawine

Yalumba

Location: 40 Eden Valley Road, Angaston SA 5353

Open: 7 Days

Yalumba is a legend in Australian wine, with 170 years of heritage to explore at their Barossa cellar door. Their Icon Tastings and private tours are a must for wine lovers, and their 100-year-old cooperage will give you a taste of the craftsmanship that goes into every barrel. Don’t miss the seasonal platters available with tastings, or the picnic packs to enjoy at leisure in their stunning grounds.

undefined

Lindsay Wine Estates

Location: 15 Vine Vale Road, Tanunda 5352

Open: Friday - Sunday

If you’re after a cellar door to relax into, head to Lindsay Wine Estates. Offering tasting flights of their estate grown Barossa beauties, they’re also home to an extensive vinyl collection - we’re talking a few thousand records regularly rotating on their turntable in the renovated heritage property. Sip on a shiraz while lounging on the lawn or grab a pizza from the woodfire oven on weekends. It’s all about relaxation with epic wines here.

undefined

@grantburgewines

Grant Burge

Location: 11 Lily Farm Road, Krondorf, South Australia 5352

Open: 7 Days

Another generational enterprise, the Burge family have called Barossa home since the 1800s, and five generations have been winemaking here. Meshach Burge kicked everything off in 1865, and the label has gone from strength to strength since then -  and the cellar door (plus their signature wine) carries his moniker. Appointed by stunning views, swing by for a tasting flight to swirl and sip through their history.

The Standish Wine Company

Reopening Good Friday 2025.

This is one to pre-book; opening again for tastings on Good Friday 2025. If the reason you’re visiting the Barossa is because your heart belongs to shiraz, it’s your chance to fall in love at first sip all over again, in a way that only the terroir of this place can do.

Ps. make sure to check the winery websites we've linked above for up-to-date info on openings and bookings, especially around the holidays.
