There’s an obvious reason that the main tasting trail in King Valley is famed as the “Prosecco Road” - the premium Italian inspired bubbles made here, reflecting the terroir and history of the region. But there’s loads more to discover too, and here’s five cellar doors we reckon are worth your time if you’re taking a little trip to sip.

Dal Zotto

With roots tracing back to the Italian town of Valdobbiadene (aka, prosecco’s heartlands), the Dal Zotto family’s signature prosecco tasting isn’t to be missed - scooping up a handful of 95pt scores in Halliday’s 2024 Wine Companion. There’s also the option of swirling through their red and white varietals if you fancy though, with all wines made onsite. Open daily, bookings essential; eat before, as their trattoria dining is currently closed (a new offering is currently in the works though).

4861 Wangaratta-Whitfield Rd, Whitfield, VIC 3733, open 7 days.

Pizzini

The Pizzini family hails from Trentino in Northern Italy, and began growing vines in the 1970s, releasing their first wine in 1994. Their wines are the real expression of traditional Italian varieties grown in King Valley terroir - expect prosecco, arneis pinot grigio, sangiovese, nebbiolo, barbera as well as rarer gems like canaiolo and teroldego. Open daily, bookings are definitely recommended but walk-ins can be accommodated - there’s always the option of grabbing a picnic platter of salami and cheese and enjoying a glass in their grounds.

175 King Valley Rd, Whitfield VIC 3733, open 7 days.

Brown Brothers

A huge name, the Brown family are recognised as one of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW), having made wine in the region since 1889. With numerous tasting flights available (and over 60 wines on offer), choose your own adventure in discovering what’s made them so great. Open daily, with a Good Food Guide hatted restaurant also located on site and showcasing a contemporary menu of seasonal highlights.

La Cantina

All fruit at La Cantina is estate grown and vinified on site - in fact, they were previously contracted to supply fruit for the Brown Brothers. There’s a huge focus on fruit expression here, with minimal preservatives used (they’re also fully vegan). Their cellar door is built in the traditional Tuscan style from locally quarried stone - wine tasting is complimentary, and they’re open daily.

54 Honeys Ln, King Valley VIC 3678, open 7 days.

Wood Park

Wood Park Wines are focused on sustainable environmental practices and minimal chemical use in their winemaking - which shows in the stellar final product you get to sample at the cellar door. Cabernet, shiraz, sangiovese, tempranillo, zinfandel, petit verdot, viognier and roussane are all sourced from their home block at Wood Park, with other varietals sourced from premium parcels around the King Valley. They’re also located in the fantastic Milawa Cheese Complex, if you need another reason to visit.
